The 86A came standard with two interfaces for floppy drives and a parallel (Centronics type) printer interface. The 86 had an output port for composite video. It was commonly connected to the 82912A (9 inch) or (12 inch) monitor. The 86A came standard with 64K RAM. The 86B replaced the 86A in 1983.

For the larger HP-86 and HP-87 series, HP also offered a plug-in CP/M processor card with a separate Zilog Z80 processor. [5] HP would later embrace CP/M more substantially and release the HP-125 running CP/M 2.2 as standard.

The HP-83, HP-85, and HP-86A did not have built-in HP-IB but HP-IB support could be added. (HP-IB was built-in to the HP-86B, HP-87 and 87XM) The HP-86 was available with 64K or 128K of RAM. These models featured a wider CRT that displayed 16 rows of 80-character lines. (Graphics mode was the same with the image centered in the display.)

The HP-86 was a high-end version of the HP-83 and HP-85 computers, offering more main memory, and a larger (external) monitor. This line of computers was intended for technical and scientific applications. My HP-86A comes with a 12" black-and-white monitor, a single 5.25" disk drive, and a dot-matrix printer.

I am updating the PRM-85 userguide for HP-86/87 users, and would like to give some accurate advice on setting the board up. It would cause a clash if the machine had one ROM built in that was the same as one enabled on the PRM-85, so I am trying to avoid this occuring.
