HMS Welshman was an Abdiel-class minelayer of the Royal Navy, launched in September 1941. During World War II she served with the Home Fleet carrying out minelaying operations, before being transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet in mid-1942 for the Malta Convoys. She also saw service during Operation Torch.

Abdiel-class fast cruiser minelayer (first group) ordered on 21st March 1939 from R & W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd at Hebburn on Tyne. The ship was laid down on 8th June 1939 and was launched on 4th September 1940 as the first RN ship to carry the name. Her build was completed on 25 August 1941.

The victim was HMS Welshman (M 84) (Capt W.H.D. Friedberger, DSO, RN) which sank about 45 miles east-northeast off Tobruk, Libya. Eight officers, 144 ratings and 13 passengers, including two civilians and four air crew members that had been badly burnt in a plane crash on Malta.

Sunk on 1 Feb 1943 by U-617 (Brandi).
