Dec 11, 2011 · "gumi" is just a suffix, with no real meaning, as in Yamaguchi-gumi, so it can't be used independently? "kumi" and "kai", both means "group" are the basic words used independently. ('gumi' is a corrupted form of 'kumi'.)

I also found various Japanese sources that claim there is no difference anymore, and that naming happens randomly, in other words -kumi/-gumi, -kai, and -ikka are simply part of the proper names, and don’t say anything about the organisation of the group. So, I wouldn’t think too deeply about the name Shinseikai.

The Tojo Clan is called the Toujoukai in Japanese. -kai is a very general purpose suffix used for all sorts of groups, from student and city councils to fanclubs (doukoukai). They're generally consistent about rendering it as 'clan' in yakuza group names, regardless of whether it's a smaller group like the Go-ryu Clan or a huge thing like the Tojo.
