Labels for graticules, measured grids, and MGRS grids are written and formatted using tags. Tags can be used individually, or combined to create complex labels. There are some tags that work for all grid types, and some tags that are specific to a certain type. For a broader review of tags, see Dynamic text tags.

Labels are text that identifies gridlines in a custom grid. If the grid is based on a linear feature, labels are drawn where the feature intersects the map frame edge. If the grid is based on a polygon feature, labels are drawn between the edges of a feature.

Measured grids, commonly referred to as grids, are a network of evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines that delineate the projected coordinates of the map. To delineate lines of latitude and longitude, use a graticule. Once a grid has been added to a map frame, you can change its appearance by modifying its properties.

Jul 20, 2022 · Whether I create grid labels manually or through code (C#), I am unable to manage which labels display when they encounter other overlapping/conflicting labels. The labeling engine for grid entries tends to prioritize the top-most grid. I don't see a place where I can weight or change that priority.

Feb 18, 2015 · Another solution, maybe simpler, is to create your grid as a vector layer, using the "create grid" tool in the processing toolbox. You can then style it exactly as you want, and the labels will automatically go above it (and even avoid it if you want).

Jul 22, 2019 · I'm building a custom map for ATV trails in QGIS 3.4. Is it possible to add a label to a gridline on the map surface in a layout? I've already labelled the gridline around the frame but would like to add one on the map itself. Example attached.

You need to add two new columns to the attrib table, say label_x, label_y. THen in the "Data Defined Settings" in the Labeling window, choose those two columns for "X coordinate" and "Y coordinate" respectively.
