Today, four of the Gorna Liyan Indigenous Scholarship students came to talk to Year 4 about their beliefs and values. It was an engaging and enthralling morning.

For Mayala it means carrying on what our old people taught us and sharing this with our generations to come so that Mayala people remain strong with gorna liyan and the Country remains healthy.

If that was not enough we ended the week with our book launch ‘Djarindjin Gorna Jawal’. We acknowledged the participation of some students through our very own NAIDOC and Gorna Liyan Awards.

We are in discussions with a remote Indigenous community in Western Australia. Together, we aim to co-design and co-build new homes and essential community resources. This collaborative effort ensures that the community’s needs and cultural values are at the forefront of the project.

Our connection is through our spirit form, or our liyan. We are a First Nations not-for-profit that exists to centre First Nations people, Country and truth-telling. We acknowledge all First Peoples of this land and celebrate their enduring connections to Country, knowledge and stories.

This research project aims to explore the concept of Liyan, a very important concept for Nyikina people of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Nyikina collaborators have described it as a feeling in the chest area that is linked with a sense of connection, intuition, and general well-being.

“My liyan is my moral compass, is the ‘feeling’ which helps me to navigate my movements on country and it helps me to read people and determines my relationship with them. This ‘feeling or liyan’ is deeply personal and guides my life journey with human and non-human beings; the plants, the trees the birds and other animals.”
