Gong Jian was born in 1978 in Hubei Province, China and graduated from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 2001. Jian has a diverse painting practice, from the original "bad painting" style to the later conceptualist abstraction attempts, in order to find inspirations for a series of fundamental problems in painting.

Gong Jian works in a diverse range of media from painting to installation. Notable for his resistance to the centrism of Beijing via his work from the artistic periphery of Wuhan, he has proven himself to be one of the most interesting artists of his generation.

Gong Jian graduated from the Institute of Fine Art in Hubei, China, where he continues to live and work. In his paintings, installations, and works in other media, he experiments with perceived degrees of authenticity by playing with the relationship between style and content.

Gong Jian’s work has been widely shown in group and solo exhibitions internationally, including ‘Force Majeure’, Eli Klein Gallery, New York (2020); ‘Open Islands’, Tang Contemporary, Bangkok (2019) and ‘Among Friends’, Boers-Li Gallery, Beijing (2017).

This exhibition will spotlight Gong Jian's most recent creations from the past two years. Under his artistic gaze, the interplay and resonance between Gong Jian and this era have jointly woven vivid depictions of a vibrant life.
