Glibc is the implementation that most Linuxes use, but there are others. Glibc also contains (as Aftnix states) the glue functions which set up the scene for jumps into the kernel (also known as system calls). So many of glibc's 'functions' don't do the actual work but only delegate to the kernel. To read the source of Glibc, just google for it.

glibc isn't a single .so (dynamic library) file -- there are a bunch, but libc and libm are the most commonly-used two. All of the static and dynamic libraries are stored in /lib. libc is a generic term used to refer to all C standard libraries -- there are several. glibc is the most commonly used one; others include eglibc, uclibc, and dietlibc.

GLIBC_ belongs to glibc, and GLIBCXX_ to libstdc++. libstdc++ can be built against many different glibc versions, and this can result in different GLIBC_ version references, but the set of GLIBCXX_ versions is not changed by that.

Jun 26, 2021 · The libraries shipped by glibc have a lot of reverse dependencies, and an upgrade would probably trigger a need to rebuild quite a few other packages. So if a later glibc is important for some reason, the best option you have is to upgrade to 20.10 and then 21.04.
