The ALCO Century 430 is a four- axle, 3,000 hp (2,237 kW) diesel-electric locomotive. 16 were built between July 1966 and February 1968. [1] . Cataloged as a part of ALCO's 'Century' line of locomotives, the C430 was an upgraded version of the C425 model. Since 1992, five C430s have remained in existence. [2]

Nov 5, 2009 · In principle, the Alco-designed "Hi-Ad" trucks used under the C430 ***COULD*** have been used on GE locomotives (after all, they were designed to fit the same center plate on an Alco locomotive's underbody as the Commonwealth truck used on most 4-axle GE U-series).

The C430 was a four-axle equivalent of the C630, and used the same AC equipment and engines. It was launched in 1966 as the latest update of B-B locomotives, and introduced Alco's new high-adhesion truck, offered as an option on the C630, but standard on the C430.

Dec 24, 2024 · Despite the C430's poor sales it did offer hefty tractive effort thanks to its rugged GE traction motors. The model also featured Alco's now-classic carbody design sporting a long, sweeping trailing hood and very short nose.

Dec 11, 2013 · U30B and C-430 both had ALDAC (adhesion loss detection and control) wheelslip control-based upon measurement of axle speed via axle mounted AC generators. One would need to examine the schematics of the locos in question in order to verify differences in equipment, if any.

The C430 was Alco s answer to EMD s GP-40 and GE s U-30B. Of course it was too little and too later for the builder as only 16 of the brutes were built. A surprising number of the 16 received second lives though and a few remain in service today in the Northeast.

Powered by a V16 FDL prime mover, the 3,000 h.p. U30B was GE’s answer to EMDs popular GP40 and ALCOs C430 Locomotive. A total of 295 U30Bs were built by GE between 1966 and 1975. This model represents a “phase 2” U30B locomotive.
