
The Sacre Class D12 (GCR Class 6B) 4-4-0 Locomotives
One of these designers was Sacre who introduced the 4-4-0 to the Manchester Sheffield & Lincoln Railway (MS&LR, later GCR) in 1877 with his Class 6B (LNER Class D12). In common with many of his contemporaries, Sacre did not take advantage of the resulting longer frame length with a longer boiler.

Although different from the later GCR 4-6-0s, the pair of 8Cs (B1 in LNER parlance) remained in steady, if varied, service right through World War II. Reclassified B18 to clear the way for Thompson's B1 class, the pair were retired and scrapped in 1947.

The Parker Class D8 (GCR Class 6DB) 4-4-0 Locomotives. The Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway's (MS&LR, later GCR) Class 6DB locomotives were a development of the MS&LR Class 6D 2-4-0 (LNER E2) design. The 6Ds were noted for poor riding which was blamed on the single carrying axle.
