Foveal hypoplasia is an ocular abnormality in which the foveal pit either fails to develop or does not completely develop. It is associated with poor visual acuity and nystagmus. [1] . It may present in isolation or be associated with other conditions such as albinism, coloboma, optic nerve hypoplasia, retinopathy of prematurity, and aniridia.

To elucidate the visual significance of the foveal pit by measuring foveal architecture and function and to reassess use of the term (as visual acuity can vary among patients who lack a pit). We describe 4 patients who lack a foveal pit.

Our measures give evidence that foveal cone specialization is preserved anatomically and functionally; therefore, our case could be defined as fovea plana.
