Fort Caspar was a military post of the United States Army in present-day Wyoming, named after 2nd Lieutenant Caspar Collins, a U.S. Army officer who was killed in the 1865 Battle of the Platte Bridge Station against the Lakota and Cheyenne.

Fort Caspar Site History
In 1847, Brigham Young led the Mormons from Winter Quarters in present-day Nebraska to their new home in the Great Salt Lake Valley. The Pioneer Party arrived at present-day Fort Caspar on June 12. Faced with a flooding North Platte, Young commissioned the construction of a ferry boat to ensure a safe river crossing.

Fort Caspar is named for Caspar Collins, a lieutenant killed while trying to rescue a blockaded wagon train in 1865. Until that time the fort had been called Platte Bridge Station. Fort Caspar derives its primary significance from the concentration of many important events and activities.

Fort Caspar - Casper, Wyoming In 1859, Louis Guinard built a trading post and a bridge near the point where the Mormon Pioneer Company crossed the North Platte River in 1847. This station was used as an overnight stage stop, where Richard Burton spent the night on August 16, 1860.
