Sep 27, 2015 · Whenever you die in a battle and get a gameover, you're sent back to the checkpoint saved in file9. File0 is your actual save. There's also a file8. This is a bit more mysterious. I found it after beating the game and looking at the save folder, so I'm not sure when it was created (but it was certainly after the Asgore battle).

Nov 29, 2015 · file9 is an autosave file that the game makes at certain points, such as elevator rides. If file9 is newer than file0 (I believe it checks the time value in the file for that), it'll load from file9 instead of file0.
