The Ferrari SP (also known as the Ferrari Dino SP) was a series of Italian sports prototype racing cars produced by Ferrari during the early 1960s. All featured a rear mid-engine layout, a first for a Ferrari sports car.

The 246 SP caused uproar when it was unveiled at a special press conference in 1961 as it was the very first mid-engined Ferrari. The new mechanical layout was cloaked in highly innovative bodywork – developed as a result of Carlo Chiti’s wind tunnel tests – with a very low bonnet line.

1960 Ferrari 246 SP. In 1960, the Ferrari’s first mid-engine, sports prototype was released. The defining feature of the car was it’s Dino V6 engine which was mounted in the rear of the car. Motivation to move to a rear-engine platform was made after Cooper’s rear-engine Formula cars proved their superiority.

This power plant was designed by Vittorio Jano and motivated by Enzo’s son, Alfredo Ferrari. It would power the F1 car in new 1.5 liter form and the Sports Prototype with a 2.4 liter version. During the 1961 season, this engine, in combination with Phil Hill, proved its worth by helping Ferrari win despite a new and rather bulky chassis design.
