Die Zitterpappel oder auch als Espe bekannt, hat im Austrieb filzige Blätter mit bläulicher Unterseite. Sie haben eine fast runde, langstielige Form mit gelapptem Rand und „zittern“ schon beim leisesten Lufthauch.
