The EMD FT is a 1,350-horsepower (1,010 kW) diesel-electric locomotive that was produced between March 1939 and November 1945, by General Motors' Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC), later known as GM Electro-Motive Division (EMD).

Feb 28, 2025 · It was this A-B-B-A set that General Motors sent to market in 1939 as the FT. The new locomotive was given a beautiful streamlined carbody designed by the company's new styling department, then headed by legendary industrial designer Leland Knickerbocker.

In 1939, EMC sent their FT demonstrator set, consisting of two pair of drawbar-coupled A-B diesel sets, out into the railroading world to show the railroads what the future holds.

The one that started it all, GM 103 was built in 1939 by Electro Motive as an attempt to sell the railroads of the US on the idea of diesel power. No stranger to this yard as this locomotive had visited Spencer to demonstrate to the Southern Railway a diesel at work, later becoming a Southern unit itself.

After about 8 years of designing, the company came up with the EMD FT, a compact, streamlined 1350 hp "cab unit" style locomotive with the ability to MU (Multiple unit) with other diesel units. The FT was offered as both an A-unit and a B-unit.
