May 7, 2008 · Congenital distichiasis is almost always associated with the Lymphedema-Distichiasis (LD) syndrome. As the name implies, the syndrome consists of a double row of eyelashes and lymphedema. Lymphedema is a chronic, often debilitating, swelling of the extremities that does not typically present until after puberty.

Distichiasis is the congenital or acquired presence of a partial or complete second row of eyelashes arising from the meibomian gland orifices. This is made possible because the meibomian glands and lash follicles differentiate from a common pilosebacious unit. Acquired causes occur after trauma or chronic irritation to the eyelid margin.

Sep 1, 2015 · This video demonstrates the use of cryotherapy for the destruction of eyelashes. The patient has a history of a medial and lateral tarsorrhaphy for exposure keratopathy. The patient developed an area of distichiasis post-operatively. The area has been anesthetized with lidocaine with epinephrine.
