In terms of a "deep" growl I think you're looking at (at least first recording) Frank Mullen of Suffocation or Corpsegrinder of Monstrosity/Cannibal Corpse. They were both starting around the same and Corpsegrinder was even a guest vocalist on Suffocation's first album.

Sep 8, 2011 · If your'e talking a death growl, look into Tuvan Throat Singing, specifically Kargyraa. That teaches you to pinch off the vocal cords in a way that creates a sort of "undertone", creating a far lower pitch than the voice by itself. It's difficult, but if you can get the mechanics of it down, you'll be death growling in no time.

It's not just about singing low. Clear your throat a couple times. Like a nice hard "ahem" clear of the throat. Once you get used to that feeling, slow it down.
