The Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority was formed in 1975 by the amalgamation of the River Dart Navigation Commission and the Dart Harbour Commission. In 2007, the shortened name “Dart Harbour” was adopted for everyday use.

Dartmouth is a busy fishing harbour – one of England’s most important shellfish ports, though we also have a thriving fleet of small line fishing boats. There are commercial deep water fish quays at South Embankment in Dartmouth, and in Kingswear.

The iconic woodland along our riverbanks, often claimed to be trimmed level by the harbour team each winter is in fact a complex habitat, with similarities to tropical mangroves. The network of overhanging branches, roots and fallen branches and trees provides an excellent shelter for juvenile fish, microalgae, mussels, anemones and bryozoans.

The Harbour Office must be informed by either VHF or telephone before and after diving takes place. If diving operations take place outside of normal working hours then start and finish times of diving operations are to be notified to the Duty HM on 07968 839846.

The annual three day Dart Music Festival is now in its 26th year. The event will be held in the port and town of Dartmouth, at the mouth of the River Dart.
