Ford Rangers appeared with a reverse cut Dana 28 TTB (Twin Traction Beam) 4WD front axle in 1983. In 1990, Ford Introduced a 4.0L V6 to its engine lineup, and along came the larger Dana 35 axle to handle the increase in power. The Dana 28 didn't completely go away though.

The Dana 28 axle assembly has been known to break under severe off-roading. Even the Dana 35 is prone to break under severe conditions, but is generally stronger than the Dana 28. If you plan on doing a lot of off-roading, you should know how to replace an axle shaft on the trail.

Nov 29, 2006 · is there no easy way to tell the difference between a dana 28 and a 35? A 94 should have a 35, back in the 80's when the ranger and bronco II's came out they had the 28. I believe it was 88 when they made the switch, anyone else know. The Dana 35 housing has big ribs trailing behind the housing for reinforcement.

Apr 12, 2008 · Its easy to tell a Dana 35 apart from a 28. The dana 35 in the picture below has a smooth upper ball joint that is held in place by a pinch bolt. On a Dana 28 both the upper and lower ball joints are threaded and held in place by a large castle nut.
