The two main categories of rivers in New South Wales, are those that rise in the Great Dividing Range and flow eastwards to the sea, the Coastal NSW Rivers; and those that rise on the other side of the crest of the range and flow westward, the Inland NSW Rivers.

Creek systems are the lifeblood of our natural environment. Creeks support a high diversity of plants and animals as well as recreational areas for all to enjoy. Creeklines often provide wildlife corridors between larger bushland reserves. There are significant pressures on our creeks.

The creek rises in Sydney's south western suburbs below the former Oran Park Raceway about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north-east of Narellan and 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) west of Minto. In its upper catchment, the creek forms the boundary between the suburbs of Oran Park and Catherine Field.
