The reason coal tar products disappear is usually because of supply issues. Less coal tar is being produced, and manufacturers often have trouble sourcing it. Neutrogena has discontinued T/Gel, presumably for this reason. Check out our wiki page on coal tar for a list of products.

Last I checked walgreen's still has their brand coal tar shampoo. Not sure if Chicago has CVS or Walgreen's, but you could ship. Looks like there's still plenty of MG217-brand coal tar options on Amazon too. Edit: Neutrogena T/Gel has been discontinued, by the way. Apparently coal/coal tar has gotten hard to procure, so I would stock up now.

It's the strongest (3% coal tar) and the smell isn't as bad as T/Gel. If she goes to a dermatologist, they can also prescribe a scalp oil with a topical steroid. I had great luck with this. Coal tar shampoo really helped reduce the flakes and itching but I still had redness, a few weeks on the steroid oil and it was completely gone.

Jan 20, 2023 · Hopefully you are using a shampoo with about 2.5% coal tar extract, which has been shown to not increase risk of cancer. (I did a lot of research on this 20 years ago, when I looked into adding coal tar to regular shampoo - don't do this.) You should be rinsing it out thoroughly, like regular shampoo, this greatly reduces the odor.

Unfortunately Walmart and other retailers stopped selling coal tar shampoo of their own brand which makes me think if they source from netrogena.
