Apr 5, 2022 · A grain elevator in central Illinois has acquired this former D&I GP50, originally built for Chicago & North Western. Steve Smedley DEWEY, Ill. — Premier Cooperative in Dewey, in east central Illinois, has purchased a former D&I Railway GP50 to serve its large grain elevator.

An EMD GP50 is a 4-axle diesel–electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD). It is powered by a 16- cylinder EMD 645F3B diesel engine, which can produce between 3,500 and 3,600 hp (2,610 and 2,685 kW). 278 examples of this locomotive were built by EMD between 1980 and 1985.

Westbound CNW tonnage at Elmhurst. Colors washing away... Waiting for a turn in the diesel shop for some TLC, this unit is as sunbleached as CNW power gets. The yellow didn't stay very yellow for long.

CNW GP50 #5061 - was built in May of 1980. The unit was renumbered to UP 5518 upon the merger with Union Pacific. Here the 5061 is seen in service on Missouri Pacific Rails in Houston, Texas in 1986, long before the UPs take over of the CNW. - Jay Glenewinkel Photo
