Clybourn is where the north and northwest CNW (UP) lines split. Hate it when someone walks between me and my subject even when it's someone who looks like that.

She was built 12/62 as UP 913B. The Crandall Cab was an excellent, low-cost solution to make use of surplus Union Pacific E8B and E9B units. Easy to make in the the CNW shop. All straight welds. No curves and certainly no compound curves. Probably fairly rigid in a grade crossing accident. Quite functional, fulfilling the need.

These were former UP E 8B units that were acquired by CNW. Chief Mechanical Officer MH Crandall supervised their coversion to A units by adding a cab, somewhat similar to the Canadian Cab. It was a good way to save some money over new power, and get some use out of what were still decent units with some life in them.

Slightly fugly, CNW E9 "Crandall Cab" #502 through Wheaton, IL sometime in 1981/82. Ugly??? Just from the cab door forward! If my memory serves me correctly, these units were E8s rather than E9s. I remember when they were rebuilt from B units at the Oelwein Shops. They actually did both... 502 was a 9 though.
