During the past decade in discussions with CSX engineers, they stated that the modifications to the SD50 improved its performance and reliability. One described it as a hybrid --horsepower and traction similar to the SD40-2 and electrical improvements comparable to its SD60 successor.

The EMD SD50 is a 3,500- horsepower (2,610 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division. It was introduced in May 1981 as part of EMD's "50 Series"; production ceased in January 1986.

It's 16 cylinder 645F3B engine could be rated between 3,300 HP and 3,500 HP. It was the last engine to use the 645 engine, the 710 being introduced on the subsequent SD60.

From what I've read, a properly upgraded and sorted out SD50 is every bit as reliable as an SD40-2. To clarify, the CSX SD50-2 units were not rebuilds. The SD50-2 program simply de-rated the SD50's to 3,000 horsepower.
