If we take a look at Roanoke Island, we can see Fort Raleigh on the northern side, as well as the Lost Colony Theater, and some homes built precariously close to a rapidly eroding shoreline.

The word CROATOAN and the letters CRO, carved into trees within the colony’s borders, were the only signs pointing to an explanation. Despite the clues, the returning crew was unable to search for the missing colonists; a storm approached just as they came upon the desolate settlement, forcing them to turn back for England.

White took the carving as a sign that the colonists had moved inland to Croatoan, the home of Chief Manteo’s people south of Roanoke in the Outer Banks in present-day Hatteras Island. Before he could make further exploration, however, a great hurricane arose, damaging his ships and forcing him back to England.

On another tree, White found the carving "CRO." That was it. The small cannons and boats that should have been situated at the nearby bay were gone. Chests with drawings, maps and books that White had buried nearby years earlier were torn apart and ruined by weather.

Earlier in the day's search, White had seen the three Roman letters " CRO" carved into a tree on the bluff of the sound shore. In neither place did he discover a cross, the secretly agreed upon sign that the colony, now known as the Lost Colony, was in distress.
