Jan 18, 2011 · Firstly it is a small form factor so there's isn't the same level of ventilation that you get in normal desktop machines. Secondly the aluminium unibody conducts the heatep. Plastic machines will get as hot, but their cases don't conduct the heat so don't feel as hot to touch, but they are. You can get an app called SMC Fan Control.

May 15, 2019 · Screwed up VRM, leaked-out heat pipe in heatsink, bad solder joint under CPU heat spreader lid, bent or warped CPU lid or heatsink base, or (unlikely if all memory channels work) improperly seated CPU. If same CPU overheats like that with different cooler in different socket, it may be cracked solder between CPU and lid.

Remove CPU board from tray, and remove the push in plastic sprung clips that hold N/B heat sink to CPU board. replace thermal paste on N/B heatsink and replace plastic push in sprung clips. clean surface of CPU and base of CPU heatsink.

I've observed differences in temperature in excess of 15ºC on my 15" MBP between the CPU and the heat sink and 5ºC between the GPU and the heat sink.
