The U25B (nicknamed U-Boat) is the first commercially successful domestic diesel electric road locomotive designed, built, and sold by General Electric after its split with the American Locomotive Company (Alco), a company dating back to the steam era.

Burlington Northern Railroad U25B 5411 stored at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1965 as GN 2511 ( c/n 35568 ), it is listed as retired in May 1981, although it may have been taken out of service earlier, judging by the paper or plastic covering the exhaust stack.

This U25B started life as GE Demonstrator 54. Sold to Frisco as its 815 then absorbed into the BN fleet as 5217.

As Greg McDonnell notes in his book, "U-Boats," the U25B featured an array of groundbreaking technologies such as "a central air system, pressurized engine and control compartments, advanced wheel slip control, and an improved cooling system."

Jan 26, 2004 · 2) Frisco, the St. Louis-based road warmed early to GE's U25B, acquiring four production units, SLSF 800-804 and the demonstrators GE 753-756, SLSF 804-807.
