Aug 28, 2018 · I have bought a SSD with M.2 socket (B & M) key, but my computer just have a B key socket. My question is if I can connect the SSD in this B socket, and would it work correctly?

Jun 15, 2022 · A B+M keyed SSD can fit in B, M or B+M slots. Whether it actually works depends on the functionality used. An M keyed SSD can only fit in an M keyed slot, not B or B+M. A B keyed SSD can only fit in a B keyed slot, not an M or B+M. Note that the keying is in the slot and will not fit an incompatibly keyed card. Image from Wikipedia M.2

B: PCIe ×2, SATA, USB 2.0 and 3.0, audio, UIM, HSIC, SSIC, I2C and SMBus; M: PCIe ×4, SATA and SMBus; B+M: PCIe ×2, SATA, SMBus; The card you have is a PCIe NVMe card. It is very unlikely the label would lie.

Oct 2, 2017 · In general, it's possible to connect M-key SSD to B-key M2 socket, but in practice it depends on the mainboard firmware (UEFI / BIOS) and wiring. Physically, M.2 key-B slot has pins 12-19 removed. The Key-M slot has duplicated power, ground and some of third and fourth PCIe lanes signals on these pins. M.2 key-M has pins 59-66 removed.

Mar 14, 2018 · Most ssd enclosures only support either one protocol, while most motherboard m.2 ports usually support both standards at same time. (There are some exceptions.) If your port is m.2 b+m, then you can only use sata m.2 ssd. If your port is m.2 key m, you should be able to use nvme ssd, and you *might* be able to use sata m.2 ssd.

The PM871b M.2 2280 is a B+M key, wheras the Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe is an M key. You need to make sure that the motherboard slot is capable of an NVME type M key SSD. If it is, then it should work.

M.2 SATA SSDs are B+M-keyed (can fit in sockets for B-keyed and M-keyed modules), while M.2 NVMe/AHCI SSDs for PCIe 3.0 x4 lane are M-keyed. U.2 is the form factor for a new type of 2.5 inch SSD that supports hotplugging unlike M.2. U.2 drives can be AHCI or NVMe.
