Auri is a young woman described as appearing a few years older than Kvothe, with blonde hair and a delicate, petite frame. Her hair is long and thin, causing it to float around her head like a halo. She often displays very proper manners and conducts herself with a gentle and careful air.

Besides being the home to the elusive Auri, The Underthing garners an importance to Kvothe as it is the only way he can access the Archives after he was banished from them in The Name of the Wind. Auri is a former student of the University living in The Underthing, a series of ruined and forgotten places under the University. Auri is described as having extremely long & thin pale-golden hair that hangs around her head like a cloud. Auri is a foot shorter than Kvothe and is thin and lanky.

It begins when Kvothe is going across the rooftops of Mains and decides to play his lute on the rooftops. Kvothe hears a rustling and then a metal thud, he goes to investigate but the bell rings and he has to go to class.
