Wearing of the Australian Army uniform is governed by sets of rules and procedures, and various instructions and regulations. The Army Dress Manual is designed to make it easier for members to access and locate information on dress policy by consolidating information into related topics.

Universal service dress was introduced in 1902 and was worn at all times, including in the field, except for formal occasions requiring full dress. This uniform included a peaked cap, tunic, and trousers, with officers wearing a Sam Browne belt. Officers of the mounted arm wore breeches and boots, while the rest wore puttees.
