May 30, 2020 · An absolutely stunning 1977 Holden Torano A9X Hatchback is up for sale, and if you’re a fan of Australian muscle cars, things don’t get much better than this.

Holden produced 405 examples of the A9X to allow the homologation of a new rear axle and rear disc brakes to the cars raced during the Australian Touring Car Championship and, more importantly, the Bathurst 1000. Figures split between 305 sedans and 100 of the Hatchback variants the same as our feature car.

Nov 26, 2020 · In 1977, a performance variant called the A9X was introduced. This was available in both a 4-door sedan and Hatchback. As well as the fender flares and front spoiler that had adorned the L34, it brought an updated rear spoiler and a reverse bonnet scoop.

Road going A9X's used a 3.08 diff, while the Bathurst specials used a taller ratio so they could reach take-off speed along conrod straight. The taller gearing meant that the car ran at 44.8 km/h @ 1000 rpm in fourth, which translated into an awesome 268.8 km/h.

The second of three A9X racers built by RHR and the first of the iconic two door “Hatch”, her debut was certainly an interesting one; Bathurst 1977 and Ron Hodgson’s wallet and influence convinced USA icons Jonny Rutherford and Janet Guthrie down to Mt Panorama.
