The 8700k is pretty similar to Ryzen 3000 in ST performance. Overclocked pulls it roughly in line with the 5600x in gaming. 6c12t is still recommended as the gaming 'sweet spot.' A top of the line CPU that's a few generations old is almost never a major issue for fidelity-focused gaming, unless there's been a major paradigm shift.

Sep 2, 2020 · For reference, my overclocked 5820k performs similar to a stock 8700k (minus temps, 5820k runs much hotter than a stock 8700k lol). Most all of my games I play only utilize 20-25% of my CPU when paired with an OC 1080, while gaming in 3440x1440. For reference here, benchmarks show at least a 100% improvement over the 1080 in pretty much every game.

Oct 12, 2022 · To the extend yes there is some videos of 8700k being bottle neck at 1440p on YouTube with 30xx cards already but we are talking small numbers like 5% difference. I am in similar situation to you. I don't think it's worth upgrading 8700k now when in 2 years you will likely get new processors and ddr5 at sensible prices.

I went from 8700k + 1080 Ti to 8700k + 6950XT. Lots of games that struggled at 3440x1440 had huge performance jumps, while others that were particularly CPU heavy changed very little. The 8700k is still far more than enough for 99% of the games out there, but BF2042 for example is very clearly held back by the CPU.

8700k will be a bottleneck at 4K with the 4080 Super in a few games but should be fine for most. I had one with a 3080 for a couple years and the only game I remember the 8700k being the issue in was Star Wars Jedi Survivor. Upgraded to a 7800X3D and my framerate improved dramatically in that game, especially 1% lows.

This isn't the same mod from December with an i3 8350K on a Z170 board, there were some issues/sacrifices in regards to PCIe functionality.
