Aug 17, 2011 · In April 2011, I purchased a high mileage (107k), late model (2007) Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 2.5L I5 6AM. This is my 2nd Jetta (formerly owned an '03 that was totaled in an accident involving my daughter). The miles are all highway, the car is in excellent condition and is solid and sufficiently powered.

I own a 2000 Jetta GLS standard 4 cylinder engine 70k+ miles. It too consumes oil, always has. Early on, I was told by VW that the engine is designed to do this. A car buff I know concurs - "essentially german engine theory is that burning oil in the process will improve the performance of the pistons, less friction, etc."

The appeal of VW has been that it offers the solid engineering of its upper brand lines of Audi and Porsche at a price not driven beyond value. But every post online seems to warn you away from VW, not just the new Jetta and Passat as dumbed down Nissans, but the entire product line as being a sinkhole at mile 36,001.

Overally, the A5 jetta(2005.5+) is a reliable car anyway you look at it. It has 2 recalls and 11TSBs on minor things also. Compare that to the Audi A6 with 42 TSBs and counting. In fact, i'd love to own a 2008 Jetta SE, Any non silver or white Jetta Wolfsburg from 2007, or any non silver or white Jetta Period!

I used to have a 2003 TDI which had the ALH (pre-PD) engine. It was trouble-free, and I got ~40 mpg. Now I drive a 2010 TDI Sportswagen which gets about 43 mpg (and climbing), and its 2l CR engine provides a lot more power than the older ones.

2003 Jetta has a serious jerk when it shift to 2nd. Sometimes. maybe more ofen when its cold. When it had 20,000 we took it back to dealer and they didnt something (dont know what) and it didnt occur for a while then it started once a month and now its down to once a week. its out of warranty now so VW wants me to pay to have them look at it.
