Many jobs work from 8 to 5 or 9 to 6 because they provide a 1 hour unpaid lunch break. Many salaried jobs are much less strict about hours worked, as long as the employee is completing their work on schedule.

Its always confused me because the saying is "9 to 5" job, which is exactly 8 hours. But 8 hours is the standard work day so in a typical job now, you'd work 8 hours plus 1 hour for lunch so your real hours are 8 to 5. Did the saying arise from a time before a lunch hour was mandatory?
