USS Tang (SS-306) was a Balao-class submarine of World War II, the first ship of the United States Navy to bear the name Tang. She was built and launched in 1943, serving until being sunk by her own torpedo off China in the Taiwan Strait on 24 October 1944.

USS Tang (SS/AGSS-563), the lead ship of her class, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tang. She was the first American submarine designed (as opposed to modified) under the Greater Underwater Propulsion Power Program (GUPPY) for underwater performance rather than surfaced speed and handling.

USS Tang (SSN-805) will be a nuclear-powered, Virginia-class attack submarine in the United States Navy. She will also be third United States Navy vessel with the name tang, a large family of tropical fish.

Originally conceived almost as an experimental high-speed type (in contrast to the usual fleet boat), they became the basis for postwar development. Compared to wartime fleet submarines, they had much increased battery power for greater submerged speed.

For all their high underwater speed, Tang's used much the same sort of handwheel controls (for bow and stern planes) as their WW II predecessors. Tang's (SS-563) diving station shows the usual plane angle indicators, depth gauge and "bubble" (in the curved tube) that indicates the angle of the boat.

On Feb. 8, 1980 the oldest diesel-electric submarine in the Navy and the last operational one in the Atlantic Fleet, USS Tang (SS 563), was decommissioned and the famous name retired from the Navy's list of ships.

Turkey has the only two operational Tang Class submarines in the world. Both ex-USS Tang (SS-563), and ex-USS Gudgeon (SS-567) were first commissioned in 1951 and 1953 and were sold to Turkey in the early 1980s.
