Feb 28, 2018 · Music programs and disc jockeys (DJs) were not new to radio – hit parades and similar music shows had been popular before – but this marked the beginnings of contemporary music being played around the clock.

By the mid 1960s Sparkes had taken over the night time slot on 3UZ Melbourne, which was then the dominant radio force in that city. A visiting US radio consultant Ted Randall heard Ken on 3UZ and opened the door for him in Los Angeles.

3UZ Top 40 is a singles’ chart tracking the ranking and movement of songs with a slightly psychedelic style border. It includes notes on the bottom ‘IN THIS WEEK’ and ‘OUT THIS WEEK’. The verso has a photograph of a DJ and identifies the album of the week. Size: 15.5×16.4cm.

Don with his American inspired voice and antics spun them in on drive at UZ for quite sometime and moved to breakfast in 1965.
