Comparing The SN1 vs Sn2 Reactions - Master Organic Chemistry
Aug 8, 2012 · Comparing the SN1 and SN2 Reactions. In nucleophilic substitution reactions, a bond between carbon and a leaving group (C–LG) is broken, and a new bond between carbon and a nucleophile (C–Nu) is formed. Nucleophilic substitution reactions of alkyl halides occur through two main pathways.
The SN1 Reaction Mechanism – Master Organic Chemistry
Jul 13, 2012 · The SN1 reaction goes through a two-step mechanism beginning with loss of a leaving group followed by attack of a nucleophile. Full mechanism below.

SN1 reactions - Visualize Organic Chemistry
As the S N 1 mechanism involves a two-step pathway with an intermediate carbocation, it becomes preferred for substrates that can form stabilized carbocations, and when the nucleophile is poor so that the bimolecular S N 2 mechanism is difficult. One example would be the reaction of secondary benzylic alcohols with a thiol, in acidic conditions.
