A BRIEF HISTORY OF WILMORE, KENTUCKY. Wilmore was established in 1876 by the Cincinnati Southern Railroad as a flag stop with the construction of the nearby High Bridge Railroad trestle on the Kentucky River. The bridge was the highest in the world in 1877, an engineering marvel of its time.

Wilmore is known regionally for its celebration of the Fourth of July and its Old Fashioned Musical Christmas. A very successful juried fall arts-and-crafts festival is presented every October. Each November, we honor our veterans with a parade through town, ending at the Thomson-Hood Veterans Center.

Wilmore Parks & Recreation serves the Wilmore community with recreation programs and special events for all ages. This department also maintains and plans park spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Six council members govern Wilmore. The mayor serves a four-year term, and council members serve a two-year term. The mayor and city council deal with a wide variety of community issues and constituent concerns.

The City of Wilmore’s city clerk is responsible for the processing, retention, and safekeeping of all reports generated by the staff of the City of Wilmore. Records are disposed of according to the Kentucky Library and Archives Retention Schedule.

Wilmore Municipal Center. The Wilmore Municipal Center office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

The Wilmore Police Department was established in 1922 with the commission of it’s first Town Marshall to protect and serve the citizens of Wilmore. Today, the department consists of 9 full time and 3 part time sworn officers and an Administrative Assistant.
