Mar 31, 2025 · The #779’s original, diamond-shaped builder’s plates were also missing for its 1966 donation to the city of Lima, so new ones were cast using an old Lima Locomotive Works diamond from an NKP 4-6-2 as the pattern. They changed the 4-6-2’s serial number and date for the correct serial number and date for #779’s repro plates.

Apr 18, 2025 · A recent visit to the google archives turned up this story about the 779 being placed in the park. It reveals that the donation was part of a deal that allowed the railroad to get out of a contract with the city to maintain the shops and roundhouse within the city. it also explains her builders place were stolen and new ones were being made.

Mar 28, 2025 · There was one other one, NKP 741 that was overhauled - never ran - and was (cringe) scrapped. NKP 757 and the 763 were both overhauled in mid 1957 so they had slightly less than one year of road service. NKP 779 was retired in March 1958 when 9 years old. Overhaul dates of the 779 are unknown to me.
