Jamestown was founded in 1883 and is home to the University of Jamestown. In 1871, a Northern Pacific Railroad work crew set up camp where the railroad would cross the James River, adding another section to the new northern transcontinental line.

Aug 6, 2006 · Jamestown was a tent town in 1872 and extended from the James River to the Pipestem. The first settlers were T.S. Collins and J.B. Solby, who came early in November of 1871 and spent the winter in hunting and trapping. They erected their cabin on the west side of the James River near Second Street.
