A citizen of Spain, Fernando Zóbel grew up in both the United States and the Philippines. He was a gifted artist, abstract painter, and influential in the development of international postwar Modernism. As a scholar and patron of the arts, he was the founder of two museums.

The artist's most lyrical and most enigmatic work of fiction, it is what art critic Emmanuel Torres describes as Zobel' s "progression from the material to the spiritual."
