Jun 9, 2022 · Data from Planespotters.net shows that Palmerston North was also the aircraft's name at the time of the accident. Registered as ZK-NEY, this 1986-built De Havilland Dash 8-100 had previously been named Queenstown (1986-1987) and City of Palmerston North (1987-1994).

Two new de Havilland Canada Dash 8-100 aircraft were ordered (ZK-NEY and ZK-NEZ) with a view to flying between Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, with the first aircraft arriving in December 1986.
