May 27, 2016 · The ilium is divided subjectively into a cranially located wing, the most cranial portion of which is the iliac crest, and a caudally located body (Figure 5-8). The iliac crest is fused with the wing of the ilium in most dogs by 2 years of age, but a permanently incomplete fusion is common, occurring in more than 10% of dogs 3 (Figure 5-9).

The ilium is the dorsocranial part and largest region of the coxal bone, and extends obliquely from the acetabulum to the sacrum. It appears in most vertebrates including mammals and birds, but not bony fish.

Note that in the CALF, the wing of the ilium is oriented vertically, similar to the DOG (i.e., tuber sacrale dorsal to tuber coxae). However, in the adult RUMINANT and EQUINE the tubera coxae are displaced laterally.

The iliac crest is wide and convex and the ileal wing is orientated in an almost sagittal manner and both are easily palpable. Within the the ischium, the canine ischial tuberosity is linear in shape. The femoral head of the canine femur is circular and is situated in the centre of the head.

The iliac crest is the dorsocranial border or the wing of ilium.

Origin: wing and shaft of ilium. Insertion: via the common iliopsoas tendon to the lesser trochanter of the femur. The muscle passes through the muscular lacuna ; an opening between the os coxae laterally and caudally, the rectus abdominus medially and the iliac fascia cranially.
