The War of 1812 was fought by the United States and its allies against the United Kingdom and its allies in North America. It began when the United States declared war on Britain on 18 June 1812.

The U.S. Navy at the outset of the War of 1812 comprised only 16 ships, nine of them frigates. The Americans thus lacked the capacity for fleet action. After a failed early attempt to operate in squadrons, U.S. warships sailing independently scored victories.

When war was declared against Britain in June of 1812, the US Navy was quite small in size compared to the Royal Navy, comprised of six frigates authorized by the Naval Act of 1794 and other ships including gunboats, with around 5,000 sailors and 1,000 marines.
