Known among the local Hindus as Natanar Kovil, this temple is said to be the only example of a Tamil Vihara or Buddhist Palli in the country (Nicholas, 1963; Ray, 1960).

The ruins of the little-known ancient monastery – Velgam Vihara – lay hidden in the dense jungle near the quaint Periyakulam Tank. Its ancient stone inscriptions testify to the fact that both Sinhala and Tamil Buddhists venerated this site for generations.
