Marine Attack Squadron 217 (VMA-217) was a fighter squadron of the United States Marine Corps that was activated and fought during World War II. Known as "Max’s Wild Hares", they fought in many areas of the Pacific War including the Battle of Iwo Jima .

Aug 12, 2017 · Maj Max Read led VMF-217 through its first 17 months, affording unusual continuity of leadership. The squadron did the majority of its training on the F4F Wildcat as there was a shortage of F4U Corsairs.

During Operation Cartwheel in the South Pacific, it was shared among several USMC squadrons – VMF 217, and most likely VMF-213, VMF-214, VMF-215, VMF-216, and others. Summer 1944, it was with VMF-441 in the Central Pacific.

Oct 21, 2016 · VMF-217 & VMF-322 redesignated VMA squadrons. VMF-217 was disestablished and assets were transferred to VMA-322. No info yet.

On 30 January 1944, 26 B-25s and 18 B-24S, both with large fighter cover, bombed in the morning airfields near Rabaul, respectively Lakunai and Vunakanau. Twenty or thirty Zekes were intercepted on this strike, with two being destroyed and another four reported as being probably destroyed by VF-17.

On 4 August 1944, VMF-216 joined VMF (N)-534, VMF-217, and VMF-225 on Guam following the invasion of the island by United States forces. Following this, they were based on the Essex Class aircraft carrier USS Wasp (CV-18) starting in early February 1945.
