VF-154 arose when a Naval Reserve squadron was called to operational duty for the Korean war. The squadron was activated as VFB-718 upon the 1st of July 1946. Initially based at NAS Floyd Bennett, NY, their first mount was the F-6F Hellcat, soon followed by the F-4U Corsair.

Strike Fighter Squadron 154 (VFA-154), also known as the "Black Knights", is a United States Navy strike fighter squadron stationed at Naval Air Station Lemoore. The Black Knights are an operational fleet squadron flying the F/A-18F Super Hornet.

In order to improve the maneuverability, two-position wing leading-edge maneuvering slats were fitted to the F-4S, which gave a 50 percent improvement in combat turning capability in comparison with an unslatted F-4J.

During the whole of it's F-14 career VF-21 has been partnered by VF-154. This latest cruise of USS Independence has not been without incident or tension.

Jan 16, 2022 · Built as a F-4J, this Phantom was delivered in the early 70s to the US Navy and started to serve VF-154. It was transferred to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) FOUR in '76 just after it was converted to F-4S. The Spook served as the prototype for the F-4S from Jul'77.
