The Union Pacific FEF series consists of 45 4-8-4 "Northern" steam locomotives built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1937 and 1944 and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad until 1959. Like the other Union Pacific steam classes, the acronym comes from the first letter of the spelling of its wheel arrangement: Four Eight Four.

May 21, 2011 · U.P. #833 is the crown jewel of the museum collection. American Locomotive Company built her in October 1939. She weighs in at a healthy 454 tons, engine and tender, and is 113 ft 10 1/8 Inches long.

There are four surviving UP 4-8-4s: number 814 in Council Bluffs, IA; number 833 which was recently moved from Pioneer Park in Salt Lake City, UT to the Ogden Union Station Museum in Ogden, UT; number 838 at UP engine house in Cheyenne, WY and number 844, which is operational, also at UP engine house in Cheyenne, WY.

Jun 10, 2019 · This is Union Pacific Steam Locomotive #833, built in 1939. It is a FEF-2 class steam locomotive. The large smooth metal plates on the front of the engine are called “elephant ears.” They help lift the smoke above the engine so it does not flow into the cab.
