The first DDA40X, UP 6900, was delivered in April 1969, in time to participate in the celebrations of the centennial anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad driving the "Gold Spike Limited"; it arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, on the morning of May 10, 1969.

Designed and built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the units were named in honor of the railroad's centennial anniversary celebration in 1969. Accordingly, they were numbered in the 6900 series, from 6900 to 6946.

Jan 15, 2003 · Numbered as UP 6900-6946, they were known as "Centennial" locomotives because the initial deliveries started on the 100th anniversary of the May 10th 1869 driving of the golden spike at Promontory Summit, Utah.

Dec 16, 2024 · Of all the experimental diesels Union Pacific tested, the Centennials were without question the most successful. The fleet logged millions of miles in service and were well-liked by crews. For many years one DDA40X remained active on the UP roster, #6936, as part of its heritage program.

In all, 47 units were purchased (numbered 6900-6946) beginning in May of 1969 with deliveries continuing through 1971. They were numbered using the "6900" series to mark the '69 dates. The "Centennials" were designed for high-speed freight and by 1980 had successfully run up an average of 2 million miles a piece.
