Jul 6, 2024 · I had grand plans for UP 4014's run from Salt Lake City to Elko on Saturday. Skipping the fanfare in downtown I posted up at one of my favorite grade crossings on the west side of the city. The slight climb up to Orange St photographs really well with a long lens and the train looked great in the morning light.

UP 4014 Big Boy Restoration May 17, 2018; Part of the restoration includes converting the locomotive's engine into an Oil Burner, changing it's fuel from coal to no. 5 oil. This process will include replacing the coal burning grates with a fire pan and using an Oil Burner to "flow and atomize the fuel oil into a fine mist".

Seems like ORHF would be an ideal location to be on display while in Portland and could even make it a big event with an excursion on the OP line using UP 96 and some UP passenger cars. Would be neat to see UP 4014 and SP 4449 displayed together while in town. SP 4449 is technically part of UPs heritage since the 1996 merger. Posted from iPhone

While the 3985 tender may be used with the 4014 at least in the near future, it should be pointed out that the UP steam crew is presently also working on the 4014 tender, converting it to carry oil instead of coal. Attached is a picture of the work released a couple of weeks ago. Which strongly suggests two things. . .
